Overview
The Rongai Route is the only trail approaching Mount Kilimanjaro from the north and is known for its quieter paths, gradual ascent, and excellent wilderness experience. Considered one of the easier routes after Marangu, it offers a good balance of acclimatization and scenic beauty, making it ideal for climbers seeking a less crowded journey. The route ascends via remote landscapes and joins the Marangu Route for descent.
Day 1: Moshi/Arusha – Rongai Gate – Simba Camp
After breakfast, transfer to Rongai Gate via Marangu for registration, then begin your trek from Nale Moru village. Hike through farmland and pine forest on a gentle ascent to Simba Camp.
Day 2: Simba Camp – 2nd Cave Camp
A relaxed acclimatization day with a steady hike դեպի 2nd Cave Camp. Arrive early for lunch and enjoy time to rest and adjust to the altitude.
Day 3: 2nd Cave Camp – Kikelewa Camp
A short 3–4 hour hike leads to Kikelewa Camp. As you climb higher, enjoy expanding views and a peaceful high-altitude environment.
Day 4: Kikelewa Camp – Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Today’s hike is short but steep, taking you from 3,600m at Kikelewa to 4,330m at Mawenzi Tarn Camp.
Your landscape today is one of scrubby alpine moorland dotted with plants you’ll have seen nowhere else in Tanzania. Mawenzi Tarn boasts a spectacular view and ominous towers of stone, making for a unique camping experience.
Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn – Kibo Hut
Trek across the alpine desert of the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Arrive at Kibo Hut and rest in preparation for the summit push.
Day 6: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut
Begin the summit attempt just after midnight, trekking in darkness to Stella Point and onward to Uhuru Peak (5,985m) for sunrise. After reaching the summit, descend to Horombo Hut in a long but rewarding day.
Day 7: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Moshi/Arusha
Descend through forest trails to Marangu Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificate and celebrate with your team before returning to your hotel for rest.
