The Great Wildebeest Migration is often called "The Greatest Show on Earth," and for good reason.
It is a year-round, circular journey of over two million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles moving across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem.

Because the herds are always on the move, there is no single "best time" to go—it all depends on what you want to see. Here is your month-by-month guide to timing your 2026 safari perfectly.

The 2026 Migration Calendar

January – March: The Calving Season

  • Location: Southern Serengeti & Ndutu Plains

  • The Highlight: Witnessing the "Baby Boom."

  • The Experience: This is a time of incredible renewal. Around February, roughly 8,000 wildebeest calves are born every single day. The short-grass plains are lush and green, providing a perfect nursery.

  • The Drama: With thousands of vulnerable calves around, predators like lions, cheetahs, and hyenas are out in full force. If you want high-action predator sightings, this is the window for you.

April – May: The Green Season Trek

  • Location: Central Serengeti (Seronera) & Western Corridor

  • The Highlight: Massive columns of marching animals.

  • The Experience: As the southern plains dry out, the herds head north. This is the "Green Season," where the Serengeti is vibrant and full of flowers. You can see columns of wildebeest stretching up to 40 kilometers long.

  • Pro-Tip: This is a "secret" season for savvy travelers. It is often less crowded and more budget-friendly, though you should expect afternoon rain showers.

June – July: The Western Obstacle

  • Location: Western Serengeti & Grumeti River

  • The Highlight: The first major river crossing.

  • The Experience: The herds congregate in the Western Corridor, facing their first big hurdle: the Grumeti River. While not as famous as the Mara River, the Grumeti is home to some of Africa's largest crocodiles. It offers a more exclusive feel with fewer tourists.

August – October: The Iconic Mara River Crossings

  • Location: Northern Serengeti (Kogatende)

  • The Highlight: The "Leap of Faith" river crossings.

  • The Experience: This is the peak of safari season. The herds face the treacherous Mara River, braving steep banks and massive crocodiles to reach the green grass on the other side.

  • The Atmosphere: This is the most dramatic stage of the migration, but it is also the busiest. You will share sightings with other vehicles, but the sheer scale of the movement is unmatched.

November – December: The Return Journey

  • Location: Eastern Serengeti & Southern Plains

  • The Highlight: Rapid movement and fresh starts.

  • The Experience: With the "short rains" starting, the herds sense the new grass in the south and begin a fast-paced trek back. By late December, they arrive back at the southern plains to start the cycle all over again.
