Often called the "Spice Island," Zanzibar is an archipelago off the coast of Tanzania that blends white-sand tropical beauty with a deep, layered history. While many use it as a post-safari wind-down, the island is a vibrant cultural destination in its own right.
Stone Town: The Cultural Heart
The capital’s old quarter, Stone Town, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a labyrinth of narrow alleys. It represents a unique fusion of Arab, Indian, Persian, and African influences.
- The Architecture: Famous for its intricately carved "Zanzibar doors" and coral-stone buildings.
- Key Landmarks: The House of Wonders, the Old Fort, and the Sultan’s Palace.
- Forodhani Gardens: Every evening, this seafront space transforms into a street food market famous for "Zanzibar pizza" and fresh seafood skewers.
World-Class Beaches
Zanzibar is renowned for its turquoise waters and fine white sand. The experience varies significantly depending on which coast you visit:
- North (Nungwi & Kendwa): These are the most popular spots because they are largely unaffected by the tides, meaning you can swim all day. They also have a lively nightlife scene.
- East Coast (Paje & Jambiani): Known for being very tidal; the water recedes hundreds of meters at low tide. This area is a global hub for kiteboarding and offers a more laid-back, "village" feel.
- Mnemba Atoll: A tiny private island off the northeast coast surrounded by a vibrant reef, widely considered the best spot for snorkeling and diving.
The Spice Legacy
Zanzibar was once the world's leading producer of cloves. Today, Spice Tours remain a top activity. You can visit rural plantations to see (and smell) how cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, black pepper, and lemongrass are grown. It’s also one of the few places to find the rare shampoo ginger lily.
Nature and Wildlife
Beyond the ocean, the island holds unique terrestrial treasures:
- Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park: The last sanctuary for the Red Colobus monkey, a species found nowhere else on Earth.
- Prison Island (Changuu): Located a short boat ride from Stone Town, it is home to a colony of Giant Aldabra tortoises, some of which are over 150 years old.
Best Time to Visit
To catch the clearest water and sunniest skies, the best windows are:
- June to October: The long dry season (cool and dry).
- January to February: The short dry season (hot and dry).
